Don’t worry loyal readers, movl.net is now back up!
What? You didn’t know it was down for several days? Yeah, neither did I. :)
I tried to log in tonight for the first time in over a week, only to find that the site was down. Then I remembered that Erik had told me on Friday that it was down recently we he had tried to access it. I just assumed my host was having a hiccup at the moment he tried to access it.
A couple of months ago Cassie and I had some fraudulent charges on our debit cards and had to get new cards. My web host didn’t bother to tell me they couldn’t charge my card, they just shut down my site after a couple of months of not being paid. An email would have been nice.
Does anyone have a cheap (< $10/month) they would be willing to recommend? I’ve never heard of a good one.
Updates coming soon.
Loyal readers? You mean there’s another one?
I don’t know of any hosting plans that are under $10 a month. Dreamhost is pretty good, and that’s right at $10. I’d go with them.
There are a couple. :)
I should have said <= $10/month. I currently pay $9.99 a month. My host is mostly adequate, but nothing I would recommend to anyone.
Ben, I’ve been using http://quantact.com/openvzplans.shtml. Not tons of storage, but you get an entire (virtual) server with root login and all. I’m using the VZ256 plan and occasionally run into problems with the limited memory (mainly because I decided to go with gentoo and have to compile things all the time on it.) I’m using mine to serve web, mail, xmpp, dns and to just play around with, since I get full control.
Not the right thing if you’re going for a simple cheap webhost, but I’ve enjoyed it. Their customer service (a guy named Tim) is pretty quick to respond to problems, too.
I’m in the process of switching to dreamhost from bluehost. I think either is okay. Right now, I’d lean a little toward dreamhost (obviously), but not much. Neither is amazing, but neither sucks, either. They are both sufficient, and that seems to be what you get for $10/mo.: sufficient.
Moving my photos to Flickr has actually removed the biggest problem I had with previously. Now that I’m not longer processing 5MB images regularly, my demands on hosting have dropped to pretty much nothing.
Thanks for the comment, Jay. The VM-based hosting plans have always seemed interesting. I’ll have to check this one out after we get settled into our house. The limited memory makes me nervous, but it’d be nice to have root access.
Gentoo on a remote, memory-limited system? You’re a glutton for punishment aren’t you? :) I used Gentoo for a year or so, but got tired of all the compiling. It was too much work. Now I use Ubuntu and it all just works, most of the time.
I’ll have to look at Dreamhost too. Yes, not having tons of pictures on your actual site does open up a lot of choices.
For what it’s worth, bluehost will drive you crazy with emails if this scenario happens…. that doesn’t mean I recommend them.
